There are 15 smart three-year-olds set to run in the 2014 Randwick Guineas field this weekend including six single figure chances, so to help you sort the pretenders from the genuine contenders below are the Races.com.au tips on the classic.

Leading the betting markets for this year’s $600,000 Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) for Saturday at a quote of $4.20 is Kiwi raider El Roca out wide in 14.

The Trent Busuttin-trained Fastnet Rock colt is third-up for the season here having won their resuming run before a last start second in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup.

But do they have what it takes to improve on that when they step up to the mile for the first time since their Caulfield Guineas fifth to Long John from the spring?

Money is starting to come for a number of their major rivals including the Murray Baker-trained Atlante ($6) out to hand their trainer with his second Randwick Guineas on the trot following the success of It’s A Dundeel last year.

Atlante is also proven over the mile having won the NZ 2000 Guineas in November before their last start second in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

Hobartville Stakes’ winner Dissident is also under $10 in the Randwick Guineas odds at a quote of $8, but does Peter Moody’s Victorian raider have what it takes to make it two on the trot?

1st

#4 Atlante ($6)

We are tipping the second pick in the markets to get the job done here, Atlante drawn ideally in gate five with Glyn Schofield in the saddle. Her trainer did it last year with It’s A Dundeel and this Fastnet Rock colt has the class and form to do it as well. Won three straight at home in the spring including the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas, and another 1600m feature the run before by an easy three lengths so the distance here is an on-issue. First-up debut in Australia when defeated just a long neck in the Hobartville, they’ll have taken improvement from that run and while the winner that day Dissident held on in a tough effort, the extra 200m on Saturday should see Atlante get it done.

2nd

#9 Woodbine ($13)

Love the price on this Gai Waterhouse-trained Hussonet colt who ran a luckless fourth in the Hobartville, the most successful lead-up to the Randwick Guineas in recent years, after getting trapped early and making up plenty of ground late. If they get a better run from the jump here they’ll be even better over the mile from barrier 11 which has produced four winners of the race in the past 30 years. Has a win at the track to their name and also boasts the highest Win Rate of the field (60%) and an impressive 80% place rate too.

3rd

#7 Bull Point ($8.50)

Another Waterhouse runner who should get a nice run in with Woodbine for the stables. Third to Zoustar (Canterbury Stakes favourite on Saturday) in the Coolmore last season and won the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) first-up last month. Last effort was a Group 1 Futurity Stakes fourth in open company. They had their chance that day and in the end were disappointing but back in Sydney over a mile think there’s improvement in them.
