Favourites all draw wide for 2014 Golden Mile

A talented field of 16 have accepted positions in the final field for the Listed Golden Mile (1600m) at Bendigo racecourse this weekend, including exciting five-year-old Fat Al.

Having amassed six wins and four places from only 12 race starts to date, Fat Al (barrier 9) has returned to the track in 2014 in good form, producing a strong turn of foot to finish a competitive third behind Mouro and Mourinho in the Group 3 TAB Rewards Stakes (1400m) first-up on March 1st.

Trainer Peter Moody, who will also saddle Ancient King (barrier 2) in the 2014 Golden Mile, has been satisfied with the way the Al Maher gelding has returned to work in 2014, and is confident of a successful trip to Bendigo ahead of a hopeful appearance in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) in April.

Also included in the final field for the 2014 Golden Mile is consistent performer Zabeelionaire.

Yet to appear on track in 2014, Zabeelionaire was left in the spelling paddock for much of the 2013 racing calendar, with a long view to this season’s major autumn events.

Trainer Leon Corstens has underlined the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) as the major target to the highly-experienced Zabeel entire, and is particularly confident in first-up success this weekend, despite drawing the slight awkward barrier 11.

Having secured a particularly consistent 2013 spring campaign, talented stayer Mourinho has been confirmed to make the trip to Bendigo this weekend to contest the Golden Mile.

Mourinho has returned to the track in 2014 in strong form and was unlucky to finish second in the TAB Rewards Stakes first-up.

While offered a great chance to continue building on form this weekend, the Oratorio gelding will have to overcome the relatively wide barrier 12 if a chance of claiming the 2014 Golden Mile.

Talented gelding Flying Hussler claimed five wins and two places from only eight starts over a memorable 2013 spring preparation, but was unable to figure in the TAB Rewards Stakes first-up this season.

Having been allocated the extremely awkward barrier 15, Flying Hussler will be partnered by local jockey Luke Currie for the first time, and will need to find clear passage early if any chance of figuring in good position in the dying stages of the Golden Mile.
