Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday sees the 2014 Randwick Guineas play out in Sydney, the Trent Busuttin-trained Kiwi visitor El Roca currently leading the betting for this three-year-olds’ autumn classic.
Fifteen youngsters make up the field for this year’s $600,000 Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) that is due to jump at 4:47pm (AEST) as Randwick Race 7.
Five of those 15 are under double figures in the latest Randwick Guineas odds including the $4.20 favourite El Roca.
Drawn wide in barrier 14 with Hugh Bowman to ride the bookies are taking no chances with the Fastnet Rock colt who has had four of their six starts down under.
The latest of those was a close second behind Terravista in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Warwick Farm just last Saturday.
Before that they won the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) first-up at Rosehill, an effort they’re tipped to emulate when stepped up to the mile on the weekend.
El Roca saw the 1600m during the spring when fifth to Long John in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas and connections are hoping they’ve come on and matured since then.
The other single figure chances in the Randwick Guineas betting markets are then:
- #4 Atlante ($6) – Another Fastnet Rock colt over from NZ, this one prepared by Murray Baker. A Group 1 winner over the 1600m back home in the NZ 2000 Guineas during the spring, which was their third win on the trot. Came over this season and in their Aussie debut caught the eye when second in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill in a tough effort they’re likely to come on from.
- #1 Dissident ($8) – Hobartville Stakes winner looking for another win after narrowly holding on last start. Plenty of Group 1 racing having finished second in the Golden Rose, sixth in the George Main against the older horses and fourth in the Caulfield Guineas last prep. If they can put in a better staying effort than last time they’ll be hard to beat even from barrier 13 and jockey Jim Cassidy is signing them praises.
- #7 Bull Point ($8.50) – Gai Waterhouse-trained, also from boom sire Fastnet Rock, third-up for the season here with good lead-up form. Golden Rose third placegetter last prep, this time in won the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) first-up at Caulfield then was a little disappointing when fourth in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) behind Moment Of Change where they had every chance, but will appreciate coming back to their own age here.
- #5 Eurozone ($9.50) – Northern Meteor colt prepared by Team Cummings, third-up here off a good CF Orr second and close fourth in the Australian Guineas behind Cox Plate champ Shamus Award. Pulled up lame after that having felt the hard track but all reports are they are back to their best and ready to win.
Also in the mix at more generous odds and worth a look at are then the John O’Shea-trained Hobartville Stakes third placed Savvy Nature ($10), Waterhouse’s Hussonet colt Woodbine ($11) coming off a fourth in that same race, David Payne’s Australian Guineas runner-up Criterion ($13) and even JJ Atkins champion from last winter Romantic Touch ($19) in the far outside gate.
