Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A talented list of nine has been confirmed to take to the start gates for the 2014 Randwick City Stakes (2000m) this weekend after the final field and barrier draw for the Listed event were released this morning.
Despite nominating five from his talented stable of stayers, trainer Robert Hickmott has accepted positions in the 2014 Randwick City Stakes for only two; Sea Moon and Tanby.
Sea Moon (barrier 6) was touted by many as ‘one to watch’ throughout the 2013 spring, and while claiming a strong victory over Oasis Bloom and Simenon in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m), was seemingly unable to hit full potential, closing his campaign a disappointing 13th in the Melbourne Cup.
The well-trialled Beat Hollow entire was unable to make anything of an impact in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes first-up on March 8; drifting back to second last after jumping well and finishing well off the pace in eight (of eight).
Despite the less-than-favourable opening run, Hickmott is confident Sea Moon will perform to a high standard throughout 2014 and is eyeing a Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) berth on April 19th for the six-year-old.
Tanby has amassed nine wins and eight places from 32 races starts to date, but was unable to make much of an impact throughout his 2013 spring campaign.
Having performed well over a short 2013 autumn preparation, Hickmott is delighted with the building form of the talented Galileo gelding and confident of success this weekend, having drawn the ideal barrier 5.
Trainer Chris Waller is to saddle the most runners of any trainer in the 2014 Randwick City Stakes, having accepted positions in the final field for Bayrir, Opinion and Junoob (barrier 8).
French import Bayrir began his consistent racing career under the guidance of leading trainer Alain De Royer Dupree in May of 2012, and immediately impressed with a strong victory over 1800m.
While not yet reaching full potential in Australia since arriving in the care of Waller at the conclusion of his 2012 preparation, Bayrir has returned to the track in 2014 in strong form, but will need to find a clear run early if he is to figure late having drawn the slightly awkward barrier 7.
Classy five-year-old Opinion arguably enters the Randwick City Stakes as the most in-form runner in the field, having produced a strong final straight sprint to win the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) most last time out.
Securing five wins and one place from 16 race starts to date, Waller is particularly confident the Oasis Dream gelding will receive the run of the race after drawing the ideal barrier 3.
John Thompson-trained Tremec (barrier 2), The Offer (barrier 9), Margins (barrier 4) and Vaquera (barrier 1) complete the final field for the 2014 Randwick City Stakes.
