A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
A particularly strong field of 19 has been nominated for the 2014 Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m), and while sharing the same race card with seven more-highly rated events, is shaping as one of the most anticipated contests at Randwick this Saturday.
Lloyd Williams’ Macedonian Lodge is set to dominate the final field for the 2014 Randwick City Stakes, having nominated top stayers Green Moon, Masked Marvel, Mourayan, Sea Moon and Tanby in nominations for this weekend’s Listed race.
Following a less-than convincing 2013 spring campaign, 2012 Melbourne Cup champion Green Moon has seemingly returned to the track in 2014 in strong form, following up a competitive fourth in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) first-up with a spirited final straight sprint to finish second to 2013 Melbourne Cup victor Fiorente in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) last weekend.
With the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) figuring as the major targets for the Montjeu entire this campaign, Green Moon is perhaps offered his best chance of maiden 2014 success in the Randwick City Stakes.
Stable mate Sea Moon was touted as one to watch throughout the 2013 spring, and while claiming a good victory in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on October 12th, was unable to reach full potential and closed his season a disappointing 13th in the Melbourne Cup.
Opening his 2014 account last in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington last weekend, Hickmott is confident Sea Moon will recover from the poor start and record a standout autumn season.
Leading trainer Chris Waller has also nominated several runners for the 2014 Randwick City Stakes, with Bayrir, Junoob, Opinion and Trade Commissioner all chances to line up for race 8 on Saturday.
Having amassed four wins and two places from 14 race starts to date, Bayrir has so-far been unable to reach peak form in 2014, following up two unsuccessful opening runs in minor races with a disappointing fifth in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) on March 1st; a race for which he reached favouritism in betting markets.
Waller has outlined the Sydney Cup as the major target for the Medicean entire this preparation, with a long view towards the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November.
Six-year-old Junoob arguably offers Waller the best chance of 2014 Randwick City Stakes success, having returned to the track in good form this preparation.
Claiming two wins and two places in five starts since January 1st, Junoob displayed a strong turn of foot to recover from a poor jump and finish third behind Opinion and Carlton House in the Parramatta Cup most recently, sufficiently cutting his odds for success in this year’s Sydney Cup in early betting markets.
A final field of 16 plus four emergencies for the 2014 Randwick City Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
