Alpha Miss No Certainty For 2014 Golden Slipper

Trainer Gary Nickson has revealed that talented filly Alpha Miss is no certainty to contest the 2014 Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens on April 5, despite recording an impressive victory in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

Alpha Miss went into the Lonhro Plate on the fifth line of betting, but the daughter of Lucky Owners worked home strongly in the final stages of the race to score an upset win over heavily hyped juveniles Memorial, Brazen Beau and Wandjina.

Nickson was delighted with the performance of Alpha Miss, but admitted that he was unsure whether connections would pay the $150,000 late entry fee, which would earn the talented filly a start in the Golden Slipper.

“I’m not sure about the Golden Slipper,’’ Nickson told News Limited after the race.

“The plan was to go to the Magic Night Stakes and then wait for the Royal Randwick Stakes, a $500,000 race during The Championships.

“It will all hinge on how she goes in the Magic Night Stakes.

“If she happened to win that well, then we would have to look closely at the Golden Slipper.”

Jockey Jason Collett was thrilled to score his second win at black type level on Alpha Miss, after winning the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Royal Randwick during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, and he is adamant that the talented juvenile should be given an opportunity to contest the Golden Slipper.

“Apart from Earthquake, the two-year-olds this season are a fairly even bunch and Alpha Miss is up there with them.

“She’s a tough filly who tries very hard in her races.”

Alpha Miss made her racing debut with a narrow win over Tetsuko in the Gimcrack Stakes in October last year and followed that up a fortnight later with another victory in the Victory Vein Plate (1000m) at Royal Randwick.

She resumed with a fourth place finish behind Mossfun in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 15 before returning to the winners stall in the Lonhro Plate.

Earthquake ($2.90) is currently a clear favourite in 2014 Golden Slipper betting markets from Mossfun ($7.50), Unencumbered ($11) and Risen From Doubt ($14).
