Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
After a dominant staying performance in Monday’s Adelaide Cup, Nigel Blackiston’s Melbourne-based galloper Outback Joe has firmed in the markets for next month’s Sydney Cup 2014 at Randwick.
The Elvstroem six-year-old was given a confident ride by Cox Plate winning jockey Chad Schofield in yesterday’s $400,000 Group 2 feature, Outback Joe holding off a late challenge by the veteran top-weight Black Tycoon to take it out by a quarter length.
It was the winner’s first look at the two miles, a distance their trainer had always believed they would thrive over, and one Schofield showed he could also handle as a hoop.
“Nigel [Blackiston] told me before the race the horse would win and that he was a stayer desperately needing to get to two miles. And everything fell into place just as I was told,” Schofield told The Sydney Morning Herald.
”He managed the trip because he was relaxed and relished the good-hard speed. I don’t think that will be his last major success.”
Exactly what that next major success could be is still being decided by Blackiston and the horse’s connections, but one very good option would be another shot at the two miles in the $1 million Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on April 19.
Yesterday’s effort at Morphettville saw Outback Joe firm in from around the $60 mark to a $21 shot in the futures Sydney Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
The horse certainly has the breeding for such an assignment being a son of Melbourne Cup winning sire Let’s Elope (1991) and Caulfield Cup champ Elvstroem (2004).
And owner Dennis Marks is in talks with Blackiston, who formerly worked in the stables of 12 time winning Melbourne Cup trainer Bart Cummings in Melbourne, about a Sydney Cup target.
Sydney Cup markets meanwhile are led narrowly by Chris Waller’s Oasis Dream five-year-old Opinion ($8.50).
The imported stayer shot to the top of the markets after taking out the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) at Rosehill by a breezy three lengths defeating Carlton House on March 1.
They will have their likely next start on Saturday at Randwick having been nominated for the $125,000 Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m).
They are followed closely by the Jamie Edwards-trained Zipping Classic winner Sertorious and Gai Waterhouse’s Ballarat Cup champ from last November The Offer both on $9.
The Offer is also in the mix for the Randwick City Stakes this Saturday after running sixth in their first-up run over 1400m from the start of the month.
