Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday the ambitious Golden Slipper dreams of a number of young fillies go on the line as they contest the Sweet Embrace Stakes 2014 at Randwick Racecourse.
One of the key support races of Randwick Guineas Day, this year’s edition of the $175,000 Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) has attracted 14 nominees.
A number of these two-year-old fillies are in the mix for the world’s richest race for their age, the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) to run at Rosehill Gardens on April 5.
Golden Slipper betting is firmly led at the moment by $2.90 favourite Earthquake for Peter Snowden, the Blue Diamond Stakes winner yet to taste defeat.
The shortest priced of the Golden Slipper entries headed for the Sweet Embrace Stakes meanwhile is Twirl ($31) for Gai Waterhouse.
Waterhouse has won an incredible five Golden Slippers over the years, including the two most recent with Pierro (2012) and Overreach (2013).
Whether Twirl is a good enough filly to get the job done again this year is questionable, but more will be known after her run on the weekend.
The daughter of Lonhro has her third career start in the Sweet Embrace and comes off a credible third to Mossfun in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill from February 15.
The two other more notable 2014 Golden Slipper-nominated fillies also entered for the Sweet Embrace this year are then the Peter Moody-trained Bring Me The Maid ($41) and Tetsuko ($51) for Gerald Ryan.
Sebring filly Bring Me The Maid debuted at Flemington on March 1 in a 1000m black type posting a nail-biting win over Husson Eagle which she’ll be out to repeat.
Tetsuko meanwhile had a run in the Gimcrack Stakes when a close second behind Alpha Miss in the spring before a winning return at Randwick’s Kensington track over 1100m on February 26.
Ryan gained confidence in that mid-week success hoping she continues to progress looking ahead to the majors.
“Early on she was a little mad runner. This time we have taught her to settle,” he told AAP last month.
“It was good to see her get cover and find the line.
“She’s in all the big races. I don’t know whether she’s made huge improvement since the spring but we’ll poke along and see how we go.”
Also with a win already on the board are fellow Sweet Embrace Stakes nominees Occitan for Peter Snowden, the David Hayes-trained Tawteen coming off a four and a half length Sandown win over 900m and Kembla Grange winning Sebring filly Believe Yourself.
