Outback Joe Claims 2014 Adelaide Cup With Strong Staying Performance

In form hoop Chad Schofield claimed his second major race win in three days when he steered tough stayer Outback Joe to victory in the 2014 Adelaide Cup at Morphettville this afternoon.

Schofield positioned Outback Joe just off the pace in the early stages of the race, while pre-race favourites Big Memory and Cooldini took up the running, and the son of Elvstroem worked into the race beautifully coming around the final bend.

Outback Joe showed impressive acceleration when asked for an extra effort by Schofield, but was forced to fight off a late challenge from Black Tycoon, who was only narrowly denied an historic Adelaide Cup victory.

Schofield, who won the Newmarket Handicap with Lankan Rupee at Flemington on Saturday, was quick to pay credit to the toughness of Outback Joe and said that he was delighted with the way that the six-year-old finished off the race.

“It was a very brave win,” Schofield said.

“The race was hot throughout, but he only just travelled and was very relaxed with me.

“Big Memory and Cooldini were up on the pace and I was happy when that happened because they were going very quickly.

“I thought I was in the right position and around the turned I hooked him out and got him wound up.

“He was just outstanding to the line.

“Nigel and his team had him very fit and spot on; he is a very good trainer of stayers and he is starting to show it.”

Trainer Nigel Blackiston was hospitalized in the past fortnight with a nasty foot injury, but was full of confidence heading into the Adelaide Cup and said that he wouldn’t have missed his first major cup win for the world.

“We set this horse for this race and good on (owner) Dennis Marks for keeping faith in this horse,” Blackiston said.

“I knew that he would outstay them and I was never worried about him getting the two miles; I couldn’t wait to get him to two miles.

“I ran him the other day and he needed the run, he hadn’t run for six weeks, and it just topped him off perfectly for today.

“I knew that this horse would just keep on finding the line.”

Blackiston is yet to confirm his future plans with Outback Joe, but the son of Melbourne Cup winner Let’s Elope has been included in the nominations for the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on April 19.
