The Adelaide Cup 2014 takes centre stage in South Australia today, the always highly anticipated two mile showdown to run as Morphettville Race 7.
There are 13 remaining hopefuls in the field for the $400,000 Group 2 clash over 3200m following three withdrawals since final acceptances were taken late last week.
Two of those baker’s dozen are currently fighting for top spot in the Adelaide Cup betting markets with the drifting Roy Higgins winner Cooldini ($3 out to $3.10) and the Tony McEvoy-trained Big Memory ($3.30).
They are joined in single figure territory in the Adelaide Cup odds by Elvstroem gelding Outback Joe for Melbourne trainer Nigel Blackiston ($7) with the rest of the competitors over $10 in betting.
But are these top three the ones to lock into your Adelaide Cup trifecta bets today?
Or are punters better off looking for the value from the likes of David Hayes’ honest Group 3 winner Motivado ($13), 2012 Adelaide Cup winner Rialya ($15) or even 53.5kg light-weight chance Like A Carousel ($21)?
#3 Big Memory ($3.30)
Nice barrier six draw for Craig Williams’ mount who should get a gun run from there with their 54.5kg weight. Run top two in their five lead-up runs including two wins most recently taking out the Listed Night Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley on February 21 by three lengths. Improving each time they’re tested over more distance so promising for the 3200, plus they’ve got experience at the track. Lock ‘em in.
#10 Motivado ($13)
Money coming in for this six-year-old import and we can see why, plenty to like for us. They’ll love the 53.5kg and if they can stay out of trouble from inside barrier two draw can slot into a nice position and bide their time. Know how to stay and over the two miles that’s essential with form over the two miles and above in Britain, plus have handled a Group 3 field before at Morphettville (with 55kg last May) so class is there too.
#4 Cooldini ($3.10)
Solid favourite from the Robert Smerdon stables and shouldn’t be left out of any top three bets. Glen Boss rides, and boy does he know how to ride them, plus 54.5kg is manageable for this progressive four-year-old. Sydney Cup hope so there’s a lot on the line here, can they handle it? Should be a close finish, especially after they had 57kg on their back when defeating some of these in the Listed Roy Higgins over 2600m at Flemington nine days ago.
