Zululand Claims 2014 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes

Having jumped from the stalls well, the Fastnet Rock colt settled in good position amongst the pack, but looked to be out of contention as leading chances Marcado and Boomwaa took up the pace early on the famous straight.

Displaying an incredible turn of foot in the final 200 metres, Zululand breezed past the leading pack and found the line just short of a length ahead of Awesome Rock and Marcado, registering his maiden race win.

Trainer David Hayes was impressed with the form shown by the exciting two-year-old and revealed the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) is the likely target immediately following the running of the VRC Sires’ Produces Stakes.

“You love to see these expensive colts produce” Hayes said.

“He was on trial for the Sires‘ and Champagne, and if he was running on looking handy he was going to go for the Baillieu and Fernhill, so he’s invited himself into the proper races.

“I think this horse is a genuine 7 furlong horse; he showed the turn of foot today at seven that we weren’t seeing at six, so I reckon he could be a bit special at a mile.

“I just want to go for those races with not too much sprinting.”

Chairman of the Coolmore Stud Syndicate, Ken Barry was thrilled with Zululand’s performance in the VRC Sires’ Produces Stakes, particularly for the horse’s International connections.

“It’s very exciting to win this race, particularly for the overseas owners” Barry said.

“This is the first big race the overseas owners have won, and to win this Group 2 today is tremendous, it gets them off to a really great start.”

Having originally been aimed towards an appearance in the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes now figures as the major target for Zululand this preparation before heading to the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 26th.
