Thump Sprints Well to claim 2014 Surround Stakes

Exciting filly Thump has produced a strong turn of foot in the final straight to claim the 2014 Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) ahead of Real Surreal and Lucia Valentina at Warwick Farm today; resounding pre-post favourites Guelph and Sweet Idea unable to match the late pace.

Having jumped well, Thump quickly moved towards the lead and settled third behind Champagne Cath and Sweet Idea, rounding the bend in good position and taking up the pace 300 metres from home to lead and maintain a strong sprint and find the line first.

Trainer Kris Lees was disappointed with Thump’s run in the Group Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) first-up on February 22nd, but was very happy to see her return to the winner’s circle in the Surround Stakes.

“She comes with some pretty smart form next to her name” Lees said following the race.

“I was a little disappointed with her run the other day; she was a little bit further back than we expected, so at Jimmy’s recommendation we put the blinkers back on and I think it switched her on.

“She’s a nice filly and I expected more the other day, so she’s back where we expected.”

Having previously outlined the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) as the major target this preparation, Lees said today’s win has thrown a spanner into the works, albeit a good one.

“She hadn’t proven herself over that trip, so we’ll have to reassess; we may even consider a race like the Coolmore now but we’ll let the dust settle” he said.

Jockey Jim Cassidy was impressed with the way Thump reacted to being fitted with blinkers, and credited the decision to do so as pivotal in Surround Stakes success.

“She ran disappointingly at Randwick the other day, she just didn’t have the speed that she’s shown previously so I just said to Kris put a set of blinkers on and make her get up there and concentrate” Cassidy said.

“She’s just gone from one extreme to the other; a hard running filly to a very relaxed filly.”

Whether heading towards the TJ Smith Stakes or Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), Thump’s major goal appears to be the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) on April 19th this preparation. is currently displaying the best odds on all 2014 autumn Group 1 races!
