Fiorente Delivers Oliver and Gai Maiden Australian Cup

Fiorente has continued his sensational run of form to win the 2014 Australian Cup (2000m) ahead of Green Moon and Foreteller and deliver trainer Gai Waterhouse and jockey Damien Oliver a maiden win in the major Group 1 event at Flemington this afternoon.

Having jumped fairly, Fiorente settled well off the pace at the rear of the field, allowing Cox Plate/Australian Guineas Champion Shamus Award to set a slow tone from 2012 Melbourne Cup Champion Green Moon and Star Rolling.

Rounding the bend still well and truly off the pace, Fiorente once again displayed his second-to-none turn of foot to burst from the pack and approach the leaders; locking in an exciting final 300 metre sprint with Green Moon before pulling clear to win by half a length.

Jockey Damien Oliver was full of praise for the talented Monsun entire following the Australian Cup, particularly for the way he responded all questions asked.

“He’s really stamping his authority and it’s a great honour to be a part of his journey” Oliver said.

“It’s great to see a Melbourne Cup winner come back and be so dominant in the Australian cup.”

“After the half mile they started to increase and he moved into the race really nice and came to the out, so I just gave him some clear air and he was really chiming in beautifully at the clock tower and won with authority.

“He’s a dream to ride; a great attitude, particularly for a stallion.”

Trainer Gai Waterhouse was particularly impressed with Fiorente’s ability to overcome the odds time and time again.

“There he was at the top of the straight last, he was back in the field and the pressure was on right from the start; it was a very quickly run race.

“He just has this enormous determination to win.”

Waterhouse was impressed with the run from Lloyd Williams-owned Green Moon, but was blown away by her stable’s star.

“Two good Melbourne cup winners and I knew Lloyd’s horse would be hard to beat as he always is over these staying events”

“He’s very, very special; we’ve been really very privileged to see this horse run today.”

The Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) throughout April now figure as the major targets for Fiorente this preparation. is currently offering the best odds on all 2014 Autumn races!
