Catkins Blows Away Field in 2014 Wiggle Stakes

Classy mare Catkins has continued her perfect start to 2014, strolling away from the pack in the final 200 metres to win the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm Racecourse this afternoon.

Having jumped well, Catkins settled nicely two lengths off the pace behind Any Day Will Do and She’s A Girl, biding her time beautifully rounding the final bend before exploding from the pack and pulling clear to clear the line nearly three lengths ahead of a fast finishing Sharnee Rose and resuming mare Dear Demi.

Trainer Chris Waller was particularly impressed with Catkins’ performance and the ease in which she won.

“It was good. They’re hard to win and it’s hard to win by more than a length” Waller said after the Wiggle Stakes.

“She won with a bit of authority, but I guess the conditions of the race did suit her.”

Having outlined the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 22nd as the major target this preparation, Waller revealed his delight at Catkins’ form and performance leading into the major Group 1.

“You have to be winning your lead up races to show your deserve to be there” he said.

“It’s a hard race the Coolmore because it’s a handicap. She deserves to be in it with a mid-range weight, not a top weight for not having won that group 1 race.”

Jockey Hugh Bowman delivered another perfectly timed ride on the exciting Dubawi mare and is confident she has a Group 1 win in her.

“She didn’t switch off quite as well as she did the other day, obviously I didn’t go as hard but I didn’t really get smothered up until about the 600 metre mark” Bowman said after dismounting.

“I’ve got an inkling that Chris might just be keeping her on the fresh side; I think she’s still got improvement in her and she’s done it on her ear.

“If she’s going into group 1 company, and we think she’s got a group 1 in her, she needs to perform like she did today.”

Following an appearance in the Coolmore Classic in two weeks, Catkins will aim towards a second Group 1 berth in the Doncaster Mile (1600). is currently offering the best odds on all 2014 autumn races!
