Bonaria Jogs Home to win 2014 Schweppervescence Trophy

Having jumped well, Bonaria settled two lengths off the pace in fourth behind Angelic Lass, Keep De Rose and Are There Any; all of which held the same running position and dictated pace until early in the final straight.

After finding a clear line ahead of key contender Are There Any with 300 left to race, the talented Redoute’s Choice mare displayed a keen turn of foot to easily shoot clear of the pack and secure her second-straight Group 3 race.

Trainer Pat Hyland was happy with Bonaria’s performances in the Schweppervescence Trophy, who will now head to Sydney to appear in The Championships.

“It was great, a truly great effort” Hyland said after the Schweppervescence Trophy.

“Good by the horse and good by the jockey.

“She’s going very well. We’ll probably go to Sydney now and hopefully it keeps raining up there.”

Jockey Michael Rodd delivered another sensational ride on the talented five-year-old and said the race played perfectly into their hands.

“There was not a lot of speed and I drew well” Rodd said immediately after unsaddling.

“We learnt from last start (Mannerism Stakes) that you can use her a little bit if you have to; she’s better ridden quiet and held up as long as you can, but in a race like this we just put her into it early.

“The pace wasn’t too bad, it was a good even tempo and I just held back as long as I could; I didn’t want to get going too soon keeping in mind she’s got 58 (kgs).

“When I got past the leaders I just wound her up and she’s got that really good turn of foot and she puts them away pretty quickly and can stay it for quite a while.

“In a Group 1 race ridden back in a good field she could really run home.”

The Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 19th has been underlined as the major target for Bonaria this preparation, with the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) figuring as a likely lead-up event.
