2014 Liverpool City Cup Results – Terravista Ajax Stakes Bound After Tough Win

Talented gelding Terravista made it two wins from as many starts this campaign with a narrow victory over classy colt El Roca in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Warwick Farm this afternoon.

Terravista covered a fair bit of ground in the early stages of the race, but was still able to show his impressive turn-of-foot at the 200 metre mark and held off a brave El Roca to claim his sixth win from eight career starts.

Trainer Joseph Pride confirmed that Terravista would have his next race start in the Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 22 and is hopeful that the Captain Rio gelding can stamp himself as a contender for the Doncaster Mile with a win in the Group 2 event.

“This bloke is a winner; he has fantastic acceleration and you saw that again today,” Pride said.

“He tends to switch off a little bit late and Jason has been telling me to put a set of blinkers on, but it is hard to make gear changes to winners.

“He is off to the Ajax now and I think that he is a better horse with cover and a genuine tempo and I would love to think that we will get that at his next start.

“If he is a serious Doncaster horse, he probably has to knock off that Ajax in a couple of weeks’ time.”

Jason Collett has formed a good association with Terravista and was delighted with the performance of the four-year-old, but admitted that everything did not go to plan during the Liverpool City Cup this weekend.

“It didn’t pan out the way that we thought; we thought that the race would be a little bit stronger and it was a bit muddling,” Collett said.

“I was pretty happy to stay wide as long as I was in striking range of El Roca.

“I know what I have got under me and I didn’t want to expose that too early.

“He has the ability and he has really shown it.”

El Roca produced a strong performance, after missing the Hobartville Stakes last weekend, and looks set for the Randwick Guineas, while White Sage failed to fire and may not be pressed on to Group 1 races during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
