2014 Kewney Stakes Results – Solicit Makes It Two In A Row

Classy filly Solicit recorded her second straight victory with a strong win in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington this afternoon.

Solicit was well-backed after starting her autumn preparation with a dominant win in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) at Flemington on February 15 and produced another impressive effort to  score a tough win over Marianne and Suavito.

Miss Rose De Lago took up the running in the early stages of the race and Solicit was forced to do some work early, but showed her natural stamina to hold off the swoopers in the final 100 metres.

Owner Jason Moodie admitted that it was a risk backing up Solicit in another 1400 metre race, after the Street Cry filly showed impressive staying credentials during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, and was happy to see the three-year-old make it two wins from as many starts this campaign.

“That was probably a risk running three weeks into another 1400 metre race and I would say that she is looking for further,” Moodie said.

“When she gets a slower tempo and things a bit more her own way I am sure that she will keep going.

“She gets on her right now, which she never did in the spring, and she is getting the smarts about her.

“She is targeting  a 2400 metre race and that was probably the weak link in the entire chain.”

Trainer Matthew Ellerton, who prepares Solicit in partnership with Simon Zahra, has always had a good opinion of the talented three-year-old and confirmed that she would head to Sydney for a tilt at the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 5 and the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 19.

“She was there to be beaten today; she did a bit of work from the gate, but had a bit of a mid-race break and was good enough to hold them off,” Ellerton said.

“I don’t know where we go next run, it will probably be Moonee Valley or Sydney, and she will run in the Vinery and the Oaks.”
