After a successful debut at the track three weeks back the Steve Richards-trained local youngster Marcado has opened narrow favourite to take out Saturday’s 2014 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington Racecourse.

One of a dozen juveniles set to face off in this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Henry Bucks Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Newmarket Handicap Day, Choisir gelding Marcado is the $4 top pick in the latest odds.

Drawn wide in barrier nine with jockey Steven King staying on, the up-and-comer is looking to make it two wins from as many starts following their three quarter length victory in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) on February 15.

They recovered well there after an awkward jump, something King will be looking to improve on this weekend.

Hot on Marcado’s heels in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes betting markets are then fellow last start winner Awesome Rock ($4.20) and the well tried Boomwaa ($4.60) drawn in gates eight and two respectively.

Leon Corstens’ Fastnet Rock colt Awesome Rock has their third start here following runs at Bendigo and Sandown.

Their debut resulted in a seventh place finish over 900m, something they easily improved on when stepped up to 1300m on February 26 to win by two lengths from the outside barrier (14 of 14).

Robbie Laing’s Cranbourne galloper Boomwaa has had seven previous starts for one win, a three length victory over Lockroy in the Group 3 The HKJC Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) here on Emirates Stakes Day.

After a failed 10th when stepped up to open age company for the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning on February 15 they were a credible fifth behind Golden Slipper favourite Earthquake last start in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

The two others under $10 to win are then the David Hayes-trained Blue Diamond ninth placed Fastnet Rock colt Zululand (barrier five) and Mornington juvenile Malaguerra (barrier six) who was one back in the Diamond, both paying $7.50 for an upset.

For those looking for more value Peter Moody’s Werribee winner Red Letter Day coming via a Talindert Stakes fifth and the Mick Price-trained Geelong winner last time out Hawking at $11 are both also not without their claims here.
