Sweet Idea Leads 2014 Surround Stakes Field

Sweet Idea

Gai Waterhouse’s flying filly Sweet Idea continues her stunning Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign at Warwick Farm this weekend running in the Surround Stakes 2014.

Thirteen three-year-old fillies make up the field for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m), one of the major support races of Chipping Norton Stakes Day on Saturday.

One of the sure-to-be favourites based on her stunning record is Snitzel filly Sweet Idea who comes off three straight wins.

Third to star stable mate Overreach in last year’s Golden Slipper, Sweet Idea enjoyed the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes – Magic Millions Guineas double in January before coming back from a brief let-up to claim Randwick’s Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) on February 22.

She’ll now look to make it four straight in the Surround Stakes as she heads towards a shot at the $400,000 Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on April 19.

Sweet Idea is currently a $34 outsider in futures Queen Of The Turf Stakes betting however, a price that will firm if she can win from her wide barrier 12 draw on the weekend.

Also drawn wide in the Surround Stakes this year is the Peter Snowden-trained Queen Of The Turf Stakes favourite Guelph ($4.60).

Super Exceed And Excel filly Guelph has gate 13 to overcome on Saturday as the triple Group 1 winner looks to improve on her first-up sixth to Sweet Idea in the Light Fingers.

Winner of the Champagne Stakes – Flight Stakes – Thousand Guineas triple last year, Guelph is set for a better run here after blundering the start first-up.

Fillies that fared better in the Surround Stakes barrier draw meanwhile include the John O’Shea-trained Light Fingers Stakes runner-up Gypsy Diamond (barrier three) who was also fourth in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) in the spring and the Chris Waller-trained Champagne Cath (barrier two).

A daughter of Street Sense Champagne Cath, a Jay Ford mount, won at Randwick first-up before her good third in the Light Fingers in a good effort against these same fillies.

She is also one of four Waller hopefuls in the Surround Stakes mix.

His other chances of success lie in Chateau Lafaite (barrier eight), Made To Order (barrier 10) and Marmelo (barrier seven) who all won their latest starts last prep.

Other notable hopes then include the Hawkes-trained Magic Millions 2YO Classic champion Real Surreal who comes off a Light Fingers fourth and Metaphorical for Peter Moody with the inside alley.

Dylan Thomas three-year-old Metaphorical has had just the four runs to date, all in Victoria, for two wins with her latest run being a credible third behind Spirits Dance in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m).

She was blocked for a run there first-up and is tipped from improvement when she makes her Sydney debut on Saturday.

The complete Surround Stakes 2014 final field, barriers, jockeys and set weights are detailed in the table below.
