Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra’s Australian Oaks-bound filly Solicit is the headline acceptor in a 13-horse field for the Kewney Stakes 2014 at Flemington this weekend.
An ideal lead-up to the lucrative $550,000 Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse on April 19, this Saturday’s $220,000 Group 2 TAB Kewney Stakes (1400m) is one of a host of Group features running in Melbourne for Newmarket Handicap Day.
Running as Flemington Race 5 at 2:40pm (AEST) this year’s Kewney field is led by Street Cry filly Solicit who is the $6.50 second favourite in futures Australian Oaks odds at Ladbrokes.com.au behind Zanbagh ($5.50).
She jumps from barrier nine on the weekend with Damian Lane to ride seeking successive wins for the season.
Solicit had a stellar spring including her close third when a quarter length of Kirramosa in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) before her successful return on February 15.
There she put three lengths on Critical Angel at Flemington to win the Group 3 The Mittys Vanity (1400m), an effort she’ll be out to emulate in the Kewney.
Runner-up there Critical Angel is also backing up in Saturday’s race, the Peter Moody-trained filly looking to turn the tables when she jumps from gate two with Cox Plate winning jockey Chad Schofield staying on the daughter of O’reilly.
The Mittys Vanity third placed Girl In Flight, trained by Cranbourne’s Robbie Griffiths, is another Kewney hopeful this year.
Before the Command grey’s first-up third she was undefeated winning her opening three career starts last spring, and jumps from gate eight here with Ryan Maloney in the saddle once again.
The two other last start winners in the mix are then the David Hayes-trained Group performing Star Fashion with the rails run from barrier one and Saralago (barrier three) for Team Hawkes who steps up to black type company for the first time here.
Star Fashion put an easy six lengths on her closest rivals in a Geelong maiden on February 16 boosting her confidence after a number of close calls last prep including her short-head second behind Se Sauver in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) at Flemington in early October.
Other notable hopes are then the Simon Miller-trained WA visitor Miss Rose De Lago coming via a Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes third at Moonee Valley, three time Group runner up including her Angus Armanasco Stakes second last time out Marianne and Nigel Blackiston’s locally-trained improver Suavito.
