Perth Cup winner Black Tycoon will carry the top weight of 59kg in the Adelaide Cup and had his winning chances diminished further when connections drew barrier 15 for the Blackfriars gelding.

Black Tycoon has performed only fairly in two starts since his Perth Cup victory, finishing fourth in the Listed Detonator Stakes (1800m) and seventh in the Listed Prince Of Wales Hotel AHA Cup (2019m), and will need to improve significantly to be any chance of winning the Adelaide Cup next week.

The big winner from the 2014 Adelaide Cup barrier draw was in-form imported stayer Big Memory who will jump from barrier six on Monday.

Big Memory has not missed the placings since returning for his second preparation in Australia in November and broke through for his maiden win at Listed level in the Torney Night Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley on February 21 following his narrow defeat in the Listed Australian Day Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick.

The other leading contenders did not fare as well in the 2014 Adelaide Cup barrier draw; with Outback Joe (barrier nine) and Cooldini (barrier 11) set to jump in the second half of the field.

Cooldini stamped himself as a leading contender for the Adelaide Cup with a strong victory in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) at Flemington on March 1, while Outback Joe showed that he was a stayer to watch with a dominant win in the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day before finishing third behind Cooldini in his last start.

The only other stayer taking winning form into the 2014 Adelaide Cup is Nick Smart-trained Distillation (barrier five) who defied an outside barrier to record a tough win in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at Morphettville on March 1.

Veteran stayer Macedonian (barrier 12) has returned to his best form in his past two starts and is considered a legitimate winning chance in the Adelaide Cup, where he will jump from barrier 12 and be ridden by Jason Benbow.

Macedonian defied the pattern of the day to flash home late and finished a narrow third behind Instrumentalist and Travolta in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) and produced a fair performance when fourth in the Roy Higgins Quality.
