Classy filly Guelph will have the opportunity to return to the winners circle this weekend after being included in the nominations for the 2014 Surround Stakes that will be run at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
Guelph was the star filly of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, winning both the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), but failed to fire when she returned to the races in the Group 2 Light Finger Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on February 22.
The daughter of Exceed And Excel blundered at the start and was caught wide in the early stages race before racing home fairly to finish eighth behind Sweet Idea and Gypsy Diamond.
Sweet Idea and Guelph are set to battle again this weekend; with Sweet Idea searching for her fourth straight victory after returning to the races at the end of 2013 following a three month ban incurred for bleeding during the running of the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m).
The Snitzel filly resumed with a narrow win over Weinholt in the Wyong Magic Millions Stakes (1200m) on December 19 and scored an all the way victory in the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast before her impressive Light Finger Stakes victory.
Runner-up Gypsy Diamond, Chris Waller-trained Champagne Cath, 2012 Magic Millions Classic winner Real Surreal, David Vandyke-trained Arabian Gold, the talented Thump, Crown Oaks runner-up Zanbagh and Patinack Farm-owned Another Prayer are also a chance to back-up from the Light Finger Stakes in the 2014 Surround Stakes this weekend.
Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller is set to have a strong hand in the Surround Stakes; with Chateau Lafaite, Made To Order and Marmelo joining Champagne Cath in the nominations for the Group 2 event.
Australian Oaks hopeful Made To Order is set to return to the races for the first time since he took out the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1800m) at Royal Randwick on Boxing Day and impressed jockey Nash Rawiller with his performance in trackwork this morning, while Chateau Lafaite and Marmelo will both be making their debuts at Group level if they are included in the final acceptances for the race.
The 2014 Surround Stakes final field and barrier draw will be released on Monday.
