Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller will look to keep the good times rolling with his in-form mare Catkins nominating her for the Wiggle Stakes 2014 at Warwick Farm on the weekend.
The smart Dubawi four-year-old is one of 15 mares making up the early entries for this year’s edition of the $150,000 Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m), a race used as a key lead-up to some of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival majors for the mares.
Catkins is one such mare use the event as a preparatory run ahead of Group 1 targets later in her prep.
She’s been nominated for a host of classics over the coming couple of months including the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 12, as well as the $400,000 Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1400m) and the $500,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) both held the following Saturday (April 19).
For the Queen Elizabeth Catkins pays $26 in the latest Ladbrokes.com.au markets and she is also in the mix for the Queen Of The Turf as one of five single figure chances paying $9.
A dual Group 3 winner in the spring she skyrocketed into the big time in Melbourne during the Cup Carnival when runner-up behind stable mate Red Tracer defeated a mere nose in the Group 1 Myer Classic (2500m).
She returned in fine order then at Rosehill on February 15 enjoying an inside alley to beat them home narrowly in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m).
Waller has also nominated for his multiple Group 2 winner Arinosa who has been disappointing twice already this time in and She’s Clean for Saturday’s Wiggle Stakes.
While Catkins looks a top chance, the highest rated nominee in the feature is the returning Clarry Conners-trained Group 1 champ Dear Demi.
The Dehere four-year-old won the Crown Oaks as a three-year-old in 2012 and was in top form during the spring having run a brave third to Fawkner in the Caulfield Cup and second to Side Glance in the Mackinnon.
She failed her ultimate class and distance test on the first Tuesday of November however when only managing to run 15 lengths away 19th behind Waterhouse’s import Fiorente in the ‘race that stops a nation’ – the Melbourne Cup.
Other notable hopes then include Rob Heathcote’s Brisbane visitor Fire Up Fifi twice placed at Group 1 level last prep before her first-up sixth at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago, the Kris Lees-trained Myer Classic fourth placed Sharnee Rose, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Miss Stellabelle coming off back-to-back Group 3 seconds in Tasmania, Gold Coast galloper Scorpio Queen last seen running second in the Magic Millions Stayers Cup in January and Any Day Will Do for Guy Walter.
