Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Exciting Australian Derby / possible Doncaster Mile hopeful El Roca will continue their lead-up to the Group 1 this Saturday running in Sydney’s Liverpool City Cup 2014 at Warwick Farm.
The Trent Busuttin-trained Kiwi raider is one of 17 hopes nominated for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) and is looking to earn a shot at some of the upcoming Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival Group 1’s.
One option could be a run against their own age with the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 12 firmly on the agenda.
A winner of three of their five starts to date, El Roca is currently rated a $16 chance in the futures Australian Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au which are led by star New Zealand Derby winner Puccini ($6.50).
It’s a price that will firm if they step up and win on the weekend making it two from two this prep after their two length win first-up in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes at Rosehill three weeks back.
El Roca meanwhile has also been nominated for a shot at the 2014 Doncaster Mile held on the same day as the Derby and is the current $11 second pick the in the pre-field markets for the handicap behind Appearance.
There are a number of other last start winners among the Liverpool City Cup nominations this year including the resuming Hawkes-trained Ninth Legion, Joe Pride’s always honest Captain Rio gelding Terravista and Messene who has won their five most recent runs.
Fastnet Rock four-year-old Ninth Legion will be looking to pick up where they left off back in December having won the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1550m) at Randwick to finish off their campaign.
Terravista meanwhile has already had a run for the season resuming off a 12 week let-up with a Group 3 victory in the $150,000 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) on February 22.
They now boast a smart record of five wins from seven starts and are eyeing a shot at the lucrative $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 12.
The top-rated chances in the handicap ratings meanwhile are the Peter Snowden-trained veteran sprinter Pinwheel coming off a nice third behind Moody champion Moment Of Change in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield and Joe Pride’s Rain Affair looking to improve on their first-up failure when dead last behind Appearance in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m).
The Commands six-year-old however showed that the Expressway might have been just resuming nerves as they went on to impress with a blistering 11 length barrier trial win at Warwick Farm on February 28.
Also in the mix are the likes of the now Jim Litt-trained Howmuchdoyouloveme, Gai Waterhouse’s Group 3 winner Spurtonic who hasn’t run since a close ninth in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) during the spring, White Sage coming off a resuming third in the Group 2 Breeders Classic from February 15 and Litt’s other hopeful My Destiny who was less than a length away third in the Southern Cross Stakes two weeks back.
