Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A talented field of 17 has been nominated for the 2014 Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Flemington this weekend, including exciting filly Ygritte.
Having claimed a particularly strong Rosehill barrier trial on January 21st, Ygritte overcame a talented field on debut to win the Facebook Friends Race Day Maiden (1000m) before producing a strong turn of foot to finish second behind exciting filly Mossfun in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on February 15th.
Trainer Gerald Ryan has an understandably high opinion of the so-far relatively inexperienced Snitzel filly, and has highlighted the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) as a major target this preparation.
Also included in nominations for the 2014 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes is fellow Widden Stakes competitor Muscovado, who was unable to overcome an awkward start on that occasion, finishing well off the pace in fifth.
Having performed well in two preceding barrier trials at Randwick, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident of a successful maiden season for the Big Brown filly, with the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) figuring as the major target this campaign, particularly if successful in this weekend’s Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes.
Trainer David Hayes is set to dominate the final field for the 2014 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, having included largely unheralded runners Clifton Red, Taste Of Money and Tawteen in nominations for this weekend’s Group 3.
Set to make her racing debut in the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, Hayes is confident Clifton Red will perform from the outset after revealing the young filly has experienced an ideal preparation.
Despite losing ground when inconvenienced just after jumping, Taste Of Money displayed a keen final straight sprint to finish fourth in her only start to date; the Quest Moonee Valley 2.y.o F (1000m), and looks sure to figure in the dying stages of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes is offered a clean run.
Following a strong barrier trial at Cranbourne in September, Hayes elected to keep talented filly Tawteen in the spelling paddock ahead of what is shaping to be a busy autumn preparation.
Having returned to action when fifth behind leading two-year-old Earthquake in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) on January 25th, Hayes is hoping a successful run from Tawteen in the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes will translate into legitimate contention in remaining two-year-old feature events this season, including the 2014 Golden Slipper.
