There are only a couple of days left for punters to get in on the lucrative pre-field markets for this Saturday’s 2014 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington with current odds led by Oakleigh Plate champion Lankan Rupee.
The $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) is shaping up as a super sprint showdown by the best of the early autumn carnival classics and is one of two Group 1 races running in Melbourne on the day along with the Australian Cup 2014.
Of the 31 gallopers currently vying for a spot in the capacity 24-starter Newmarket Handicap final field, it is the Mick Price-trained Lankan Rupee who the bookies are tipping to win.
In the latest Newmarket Handicap betting markets the in-form Redoute’s Choice gelding pays $3.80 at Ladbrokes.com.au as they shoot for their third win this time in.
If successful the four-year-old will also be posting their fifth win on the trot not having been defeated since the spring.
Progressing through the ranks with great speed, the 14-start galloper won the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield first-up in early February.
From there they entered the Group 1 winners’ circle at the same track and distance a fortnight later thanks to their classy effort over runner-up Spirit Of Boom in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) on February 22.
It’s another tough field of rivals for them to defeat in the Newmarket, but the Aussie bookies are taking no chances with Lankan Rupee the shortie in the markets.
There are then four other hopefuls also under single-figures already with:
- Samaready ($5) – Price’s other hopeful, this More Than Ready mare was a star juvenile a couple of years back winning her opening four including the Blue Diamond, became a dual Group 1 winner last September in the Moir Stakes and has never run a bad race really, came back after a four month let up and looked in good form with a third to Snitzerland in the Black Caviar on February 15, improve off that with a run at the track so definite chance
- Shamexpress ($5.50) – Danny O’Brien-trained O’Reilly stallion is also second-up and coming via the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes where they were just a half length away second, failed in England last year but they are getting back into the swing of it now as they seek back-to-back Newmarket Handicap wins following their victory carrying 51.5kg 12 months ago, rise to 56kg this year however which they will need to handle
- Knoydart ($7) – Ace lightweight chance getting in with just 52.5kg, Peter Snowden’s More Than Ready gelding has won three of their last four starts and ran on well in an impressive effort when stepped up in class for their third in the Oakleigh Plate, they carried 53.5kg then and drop down for this with experience now on their side
- Moment Of Change ($7.50) – Deserved 58kg topweight with a star record to continue, the Peter Moody-trained Barley A Moment five-year-old shoots for Group 1 win number three (from as many starts) following their impressive CF Orr Stakes – Futurity Stakes double over the past month where they had 59kg, face some cracking rivals who kill them in the weights but have the class to perhaps overcome
Others just outside of these representing good value then include Tony Gollan’s Oakleigh Plate runner-up Spirit Of Boom ($14) down from Queensland, Nikki Burke’s Stratum gelding Unpretentious ($17) out to improve on their Lightning Stakes fifth and the resuming Fontelina ($18) for Anthony Cummings.
The Newmarket Handicap field and barriers are due for release later in the week and will be published right here at Races.com.au.
