A number of promising Australian Oaks 2014 hopes make up the nominations for the $220,000 Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday most notably the progressive Solicit.
One of the major support races for a bumper Newmarket Handicap Day in Melbourne this weekend, the 2014 Kewney Stakes is a stepping stone for three-year-old fillies eyeing a shot at the $550,000 Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Sydney’s Royal Randwick on April 19.
The latest Australian Oaks futures odds are led by Zanbagh ($5.50), Guy Walter’s Crown Oaks runner-up from the spring resuming at Randwick on February 22 with a first-up Light Fingers Stakes ninth.
While she’s not among the 23 Kewney Stakes nominees, second pick for the Oaks Solicit is.
The Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained daughter of Street Cry has finished out of the money just once in her eight start career to date headlined by her close third to Kirramosa in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
She shot ahead in pre-field Australian Oaks betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au then now the $6.50 second favourite following a successful return at Flemington on February 15.
There she put an easy three lengths on her closest rival in the Group 3 The Mittys Vanity (1400m) in the perfect autumn kick-off.
The other most notable Australian Oaks hopeful nominated for the Kewney this weekend is then the Peter Moody-trained Sensibility.
A daughter of Redoute’s choice, Sensibililty won on debut at Mornington back in August last year and also caught the eye with her Group 1 Flight Stakes second to Guelph at Randwick in October.
She returned in the Mittys vanity running fifth, an effort she’ll be out to improve on this weekend if accepted.
Moody has also nominated for The Mittys Vanity runner-up Critical Angel who handled her first Group assignment very well, Bel Esprit filly Diamond Glow who missed the Diamond as a juvenile spending 11 months sidelined and first-up Angus Armanasco Stakes third placegetter Metaphorical for the Kewney Stakes.
Along with Solicit other last start winning fillies entered for the weekend’s showdown include David Hayes’ first-up Geelong winner Star Fashion, Ibnglis Bonus champ at Randwick back on Australia Day Saralago and the undefeated Choose set for a rise in class following victories at Seymour and Sandown-Lakeside.
Other top rated fillies in the mix and high up the Kewney Stakes ballot are then Simon Miller’s star WA raider Miss Rose De Lago coming off a third in the Typhoon Tracy Stakes at Moonee Valley, the John O’Shea-trained Flight Stakes minor placegetter Bound For Earth and Chris Waller’s consistent Champagne Cath last seen running a second-up third to Sweet Idea in the Light Fingers Stakes in Sydney.
See below for the complete Kewney Stakes 2014 nominations with the final field to be decided on Wednesday.
