Distillation Claims 2014 Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes

Well-trialled local Distillation has dictated the pace only 800 metres into running and maintained control to claim the 2014 Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at Morphettville Racecourse ahead of Base and Waltzing To Win this afternoon.

Having jumped from the gates fairly, the classy Half Hennessy gelding initially took up a place on the heels of leaders Umaluka, Sky Raider and Vima; however opted to push forward alongside Waltzing To Win and set a slightly firmer pace; completely re-shuffling running order.

Rounding the final bend in the clear, Distillation began a surging final straight sprint alongside talented stayer Base; both pulling nearly four lengths clear from the remaining field over the final 300 metres, however it was Distillation who produced the cleaner finish; a mere-nose in the clear.

Noted as an ideal final lead-up event and form assessor for the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) on March 10th, Distillation’s impressive run has noticeably altered betting markets for Monday-week’s feature.

Having now amassed seven wins from 42 professional starts to date for trainer Nick Smart, Distillation has arguably hit career best form over his currently preparation, following up a less-than impressive ninth in the Paul’s Milk Handicap (1400m) first-up with three strong thirds in minors and runner-up behind Val Mondo in the Projection Graphics Maiden (2500m) on February 1st.
