The final field and barrier draw for the Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) has been released, with only seven runners confirmed to line up for the Group 2 feature at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday including 2014 Golden Slipper frontrunners Unencumbered and Law.
Unencumbered has quickly stamped himself as one of the country’s leading two-year-olds, claiming five wins from only six starts since debuting on track in October that have included both the Group 3 McLachlan Stakes (1200m) and $2 million Magic Millions 2.y.o Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast most recently.
Currently sitting as outright second-favourite behind exciting filly Earthquake in betting markets for the world’s richest two-year-old race, trainer Bjorn Baker has identified the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd as the final preparation run for the talented Testa Rossa colt ahead of the Golden Slipper.
Having drawn the ideal barrier two for the 2013 Silver Slipper this weekend, Unencumbered will be partnered by regular jockey Nathan Berry for the remainder of his autumn preparation.
While only contesting two competitive races to date, Gai Waterhouse-trained Law currently sits outright third favourite for the Golden Slipper at a quote of $11.
Debuting on October 5th in the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) amongst a talented field that included Mohave and Ghibellines, Law has displayed an exception turn of foot in both starts to date and will be particularly difficult to beat in the Silver Slipper from barrier 3.
Also included in the final field for the 2014 Silver Slipper, Risen From Doubt has been allocated the slightly awkward barrier 6 for race 4 at Rosehill on Saturday.
Risen From Doubt produced an incredible run to win his only start so far; the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) on October 5th ahead of a classy field that included Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Jabali and Boomwaa.
Trainer Tony McEvoy is confident his star two-year-old will show a lot of improvement in Saturday’s first-up run for 2014 having claimed a strong Wyong barrier trial last week.
Team Hawkes-trained Mossfun has also been confirmed for the 2014 Silver Slipper, and will be confident of continuing her so-far perfect career start despite drawing the wide barrier 7.
Mossfun produced a particularly strong final straight sprint in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) first-up on February 15th, and is likely to feature in the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 12th only one week after the 2014 Golden Slipper.
Paul Perry-trained Modoc (barrier 5), Hampton Court (barrier 4) and Press Report (barrier 1) round out the final field for the 2014 Silver Slipper.
