Following a less-than-ideal run for fourth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse last weekend, connections of Rubick have today elected to remove the talented colt from the 2014 Golden Slipper nominations list.
Despite carrying favouritism into his maiden Group 1 event last weekend, the Encosta De Lago colt was unable to sustain an early sprint up Caulfield’s final straight and was comfortably passed by female counterpart Earthquake as well as Mick Price-trained pair Jabali and Cornrow.
Part-owner David Raphael took to Twitter this morning to confirm the news of Rubick’s removal from 2014 Golden Slipper calculations, with a decent spell now on the cards before a busy 2014 spring preparation.
“Rubick has shown use signs that a spell is the best thing for him after two pressure runs at Caulfield. He is as sound as a bell!” Raphael tweeted.
Despite being touted as a showdown between the country’s most exciting two-year-old filly and colt, Rubick was unable to match the incredible turn of foot of Earthquake and was quickly swallowed up in the final 300 metres of the Blue Diamond Stakes.
Rubick began his career in scintillating form, following up a near-three length victory over classy opponent Twirl in the TAB Iphone App Plate (1000m) on debut with a comfortable one-length win over Jabali and Chivalry in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude event for colts and geldings (1100m) on February 8th.
Having lead betting markets for the 2014 Golden Slipper leading into the Blue Diamond Stakes, the boom colt’s inability to maintain a sprint and match the late pace of Earthquake lead to a huge drift in prices; offered at an incredibly high $26 at Ladbrokes.com.au before being removed this morning.
Currently, Earthquake is clear favourite for the 2014 Golden Slipper at a quote of $2.90 ahead of Unencumbered ($7.50) and Gai Waterhouse-trained Law ($11).
