Having finished no worse than third in his six professional races to date, exciting three-year-old Koroibete is set to return to the track for the first time in 2014 at Rosehill Gardens this weekend after being included in nominations for the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m).
Saddled by leading Sydney-based trainer Gerald Ryan, the exciting son of Kheleyf has been confirmed for a busy autumn preparation aimed towards the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 12th.
Having contested a strong Rosehill barrier trial on Tuesday last week, Ryan is pleased with the form Koroibete will carry into his first-up run this weekend, and believes the talented gelding is a particularly exciting prospect for the future.
“He only had a three-week spell and he looks nice and strong” Ryan told AAP.
“I was pleased with his barrier trial last week and he will follow a traditional path to the Derby and go to the Randwick Guineas after Saturday then the Rosehill Guineas.
Having initially been geared towards a career as a sprinter, Ryan quickly identified Korobiete as a potentially successful stayer; an acknowledgement that was then reinforced in the three-year-old’s most recent event when producing a near-two length victory in the 2014 ATC Membership on Sale Maiden over 1800m in December.
“As soon as I saw him I knew he would be a stayer even though everyone told me he was bred to be a sprinter” Ryan added.
Having been included in a nominated list of 11 for the Hobartville Stakes, Koroibete will need to be in peak condition and draw a favourable barrier to overcome a field that includes 2014 Eskimo Stakes winner El Roca, who produced an incredible turn of foot to win the first-up Listed event two weeks ago, 2013 Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas Champion Atlante and Peter Moody-trained contender Dissident.
