Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
In-form sprinter Lankan Rupee has been confirmed for an appearance in the 2014 Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and will be partnered by young jockey Chad Schofield after regular partner Craig Newitt was confirmed to take the ride on stablemate Samaready.
Having returned to the track in 2014 in incredible form, Lankan Rupee was today allocated 56.6kgs to carry, only 1.5kgs less than Moment Of Change, who will be chasing his third-consecutive win at Group 1 level with the top weight of 58kgs.
Trainer Mick Price, who has already saddled Lankan Rupee to victories in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) and Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) this preparation, told TVN today that both Lankan Rupee and Samaready will head to Sydney following the Newmarket to chase the Group 1 T.J Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 12th.
“They will run in the Newmarket then get ready to go to Sydney for the T.J Smith” Price said.
Chad Schofield, who has experienced something of a meteoric rise to prominence over the past 12 months, was ecstatic to learn he had been picked to partner the red-hot son of Redoute’s Choice in the 2014 Newmarket Handicap.
“I can’t believe it, it’s amazing” Schofield told TVN.
“I’m very privileged to be riding the Newmarket favourite; I hope I do it justice.”
Lankan Rupee has claimed an incredible five wins from six starts since being gelded at the conclusion of his 2013 autumn preparation, having experienced severe problems in focusing on the task at hand prior.
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering Lankan Rupee as outright $3.80 favourite for the 2014 Newmarket Handicap ahead of 2013 champion Shamexpress ($5.50), 2014 Hareeba Stakes victor Knoydart ($6) and Samaready ($6).
