Trainer Guy Walter is hoping a successful showing in today’s Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick will lay a strong foundation for a run at the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) in April for talented four-year-old Toydini.
Having recorded a strong and consistent 2013 that included a win in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) on October 26th, Toydini has become known for his strong first-up performances and Walter revealed the classy Bernardini gelding will return in the Southern Cross Stakes in excellent condition.
“He’s a classy horse, I’m very, very happy with how he’s come back and progressing” Walter told TVN.
“I expect him to run well fresh and I expect him to have a good autumn.”
Having drawn a final field of just nine runners for race 4 at Randwick today, the high possibility of a slowly run race in the Southern Cross Stakes is of concern to Walter, who revealed Toydini is far more likely to perform well in a high-tempo event.
“He’ll certainly run well, but I’m concerned about the tempo and small field” Walter added.
Walter has set a particularly busy 2014 autumn preparation for Toydini, with runs in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m), Group 1 George Ryder (1500m) and Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) featuring as major targets, before a possible step up in distance for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 19th.
“He’s been entered for the Queen Elizabeth and we might have a crack at it” Walter said.
Following only 1 win from nine starts is his maiden year in 2012, Toydini returned to the track in top condition in 2013; securing four wins from nine starts and third behind Boban and Streama in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 5th.
Having drawn the ideal barrier 2 for the 2014 Southern Cross Stakes, Ladbrokes.com.au has instilled Toydini as third-favourite at a current quote of $8 behind market mover Albrecht ($4.40) and Joseph Pride-trained That’s A Good Idea ($4.50).
