Lilliburlero Musters Strong Sprint to Claim 2014 Triscay Stakes

Classy mare Lilliburlero has produced a huge final straight sprint to win the 2014 Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Afternoon.

Having given a near 10 length lead to outside chance Southern Girl in the final straight, Lillibulero pinned her ears back and made up the distance, catching the $61 chance in the final 100 metres to eventually beat Recoinage and Any Day Will Do by a length-and-a-half

Trainer David Payne said Lilliburlero has responded nearly perfectly to the addition of blinkers following a less-than memorable 2013 spring preparation.

“She’s a big girl and hasn’t done much racing, but the blinkers have really switched her on” Payne said following today’s win.

“I just wanted to get a black tie for Bruce (Neill, owner), he’s a lovely bloke to train for and now we’ve got to look a big higher.

“1400 metres is not beyond her so we’ll look at something decent”.

Jockey Jay Ford delivered a perfectly timed ride on Lilliburlero in the 2014 Triscay Stakes, and was quick to praise the patience of the Redoute’s Choice mare.

“Dave said he put the hoods on her today to be positive from the good alley and he said she’s really switched on and been going really well” Ford said after dismounting.

“I think the good speed in the race really made it for us; she was able to sit there on the bunny, she towed me up the rise and was strong through the line

Commenting on jockey Jim Cassidy’s choice to pull $61 outsider Southern Girl out to a huge lead early in the straight, Ford was confident he had the speed and timing to overcome the huge deficit.

“He gave us something to chase, but by the speed he went out I was pretty confident I was going to reel him in, and hitting the furlong I knew I had him” Ford said. is currently offering the best odds on all 2014 Autumn races.
