Lankan Rupee Claims Maiden Group 1 in 2014 Oakleigh Plate

Talented gelding Lankan Rupee has continued his incredible start to 2014, comfortably winning the 2014 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield Racecourse this afternoon.

Having jumped well and finding good position within the pack rounding the bend, the classy Redoute’s Choice gelding produced a particularly strong sprint over the final 300 metres to beat Spirit Of Boom and Knoydart by two lengths.

Trainer Mick Price has not been able to fault the exciting four-year-old this preparation, labelling his run maiden win at Group 1 level as ‘perfect’.

“I just thought he got it absolutely perfect” Price said following the win.

“You can get into a lot of trouble in those sorts of races, but good pace in front of him but he’s a good horse and deserves his Group 1.”

Lankan Rupee has now won five races from six starts since being gelded at the conclusion of his 2013 autumn campaign; a decision Price said was made with great professional consideration by owners the Teeley Assets Syndicate.

“Teeley Assets are like all the good professional owners; they take proper advice and they don’t interfere.

“As a trainer it just helps, when you want to be a bit creative or when you want to be a bit conservative.

“They have been with me since just about when I started training and they’ve helped me a lot. I’m just really happy for them too.

“Just so good to see him win a Group 1, he deserves it.”

Jockey Craig Newitt has now partnered Lankan Rupee in 10 of his 13 starts, and delivered another sensational ride in the Oakleigh Plate this afternoon.

“He’s always shown us he’s well above average; unfortunately it’s just taken the ultimate sacrifice to get him to show it” Newitt said in jest of the gelding following the race.

“He had that race in control a long way out he cruised in behind a nice speed and pulled out at the top of the straight and pretty much blew them away.

“It was always going to be good speed and the beauty of him now is just does what he has to and he’s got that electrifying acceleration when you ask him.”

Lankan Rupee will now head to the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 8th and a showdown with fellow highly-rated sprinter Samaready. is offering the best odds on all 2014 autumn races, including the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap!
