Earthquake lives up to hype and wins 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes

Classy filly Earthquake has overcome a poor barrier draw to win the 2014 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse today.

Jumping well from the exceptionally awkward barrier 15, Earthquake settled just off the pace in fourth; finding a good position three-wide with cover before exploding from the pack to comfortably win by two lengths from Jabali and Cornrow.

Having picked up the pace rounding the final bend, pre-post favourite Rubick, who was expected to be fighting it out with Earthquake in the race’s dying stages, was unable to maintain an early straight sprint and faded in the last 200 metres to finish well off the pace.

Trainer Peter Snowden was delighted with Earthquake’s performance, outlining the 2014 Group 1 Golden Slipper as a now-definite target the preparation.

“It was a tremeandous win. Damien got into a good spot, she travelled really well, once balanced up she pricked her ears and went to them and I said oh my god.

“That was special.

“We’ve done our job and whatever she does from now is a bonus because that’s a Group 1 behind her now.

“I said to Paul (son) this morning ‘I just don’t think this filly has peaked at all, I still think there’s more there’.

“The Golden Slipper has always been the plan, I didn’t tell anyone but if she pulls up well she’s had the perfect preparation.”

Jockey Damien Browne steered Earthquake into perfect position from the get-go, and was quick the praise the talented Exceed And Excel filly upon dismounting.

“She’s exceptional, to come in like that” Browne told the media immediately after the win.

“On the corner I gave her a couple of slaps and she picked them up in two strides.

“The last hundred she just cut it down to half pace. It will be interesting to see when she fully gets tested how well she goes.

“At the moment it’s pure ability; she does everything pretty well but obviously from the alley she was always going to find it a little bit tricky, just have to push and shove her way in.

“There’s plenty of room for upsize there.”

Earthquake has now comfortably won three races from as many starts in her so-far short career, and is resounding favourite to take out the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th. is offering the best odds on all Group 1 races this autumn, including the 2014 Golden Slipper!
