2014 Autumn Classic Won By Vilanova – Caulfield Results

Vilanova has finally won his first race in Australia in today’s Group 2 Autumn Classic at Caulfield Racecourse today February 22, 2014.

The three-year-old was able to put together the win after a recent form lull that saw him place seventh in both of his two most recent starts.

Vilanova came flying from the pack of the pack in the final straight and was too good for his fellow 2014 Autumn Classic competitors.

Chris Waller’s stable representative, Justine Hales, was over the moon to see Vilanova back in the winning stall for the first time since his second race start.

“He’s always shown a lot of talent. And he was running well in Queensland last year behind good horses,” Hales said.

“Today he just relaxed beautifully.

“We were a little bit worried on the turn but Criag (Newitt) obviously knew what he was doing.”

Hales revealed that there a big autumn plans or Vilanova, who may feature in the Group 1 Australian Derby at Royal Randwick on April 12, 2014.

“You’d hope to see him in something like the Derby,” she said.

“A bit of confidence will help him.”

Jockey Craig Newitt felt that Vilanova’s 2014 Autumn Classic win was well deserved.

“He probably was the best horse in the race. He’s just been out of form a little bit,” Newitt said.

“He switched off really good.

“I let my bloke just go through his gears and he was really strong on the line.

“He won well.”
