Guelph Resounding favourite for 2014 Light Fingers Stakes

The 2014 Light Fingers Stakes is one of two Group 2 features races at Royal Randwick on Saturday, and will be highlighted by the return of classy filly Guelph for the first time in 2014.

Having returned to the track with a typically brilliant run in a Rosehill barrier trial on February 4th, Guelph is the overwhelming $1.90 favourite to claim the 2014 Light Fingers Stakes first-up ahead of Sweet Idea ($5), Real Surreal ($8) and Champagne Cath ($10).

Will Guelph return to her incredible form of 2013 in the 2014 Light Fingers Stakes, or can one of her 10 opponents cause a huge upset?

1st

Guelph ($1.90)

Having amassed an incredible seven wins from only 11 competitive starts including four Group 1 titles, Guelph is undoubtedly one of Australia’s best current racehorses. Closing a memorable 2013 with three consecutive victories including the Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), the talented Exceed And Excel filly is a steal at $1.90 and punters would be brave to bet against her, even in her 2014 maiden event.

2nd

Real Surreal ($8)

Carrying strong form into the 2014 Light Fingers Stakes, Team Hawkes-trained Real Surreal is shaping as the biggest threat to Guelph this weekend. Having claimed the Broncos Handicap (1000m) on debut, the exciting Real Saga filly has placed no worse than third in three proceeding starts that also include two wins. Having drawn the ideal barrier 1, Real Surreal will be partnered by Singapore-based jockey Corey Brown, who is returning to Sydney solely for Saturday’s Randwick race card.

3rd

Sweet Idea ($5)

Also carrying winning form into the 2014 Light Finger Stakes, Sweet Idea offers great value to punters at a quote of $5 having claimed the $1 million Magic Million Guineas (1400m) most recently. Trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident Sweet Idea has what it takes to overcome the Light Fingers Stakes’ talented field, particularly with in-form jockey Tommy Berry on board.
