Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The 2014 Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) will jump as one of three major Group 1 events at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday, and will feature a particularly exciting list of nine runners including several previous winners at Group 1 level.
Following a meteoric rise to success over his 2013 spring campaign, Bull Point is currently featuring as $2.90 favourite for the 2014 Futurity Stakes ahead of Moment Of Change ($3), Sizzling ($7) and surprise inclusion Polanski ($9.50), who is poised to make his delayed debut in 2014 after a nasty case of ringworm ruled out starts in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) over the past two weeks.
Can Bull Point justify his early favouritism, or can Polanski scored a huge first-up win in the 2014 Futurity Stakes?
Bull Point ($2.90)
After securing an easy victory when beating Sweet Kiss by two lengths in the TAB.com.au Handicap (1000m) on debut in June, Bull Point produced an amazingly consistent 2013 spring campaign; winning two races and placing in three over six starts, including an impressive third behind Zoustar and Dissident in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in September. Having romped home in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) ahead of Worth A Ransom and The Quarterback first-up two weeks ago, the talented Fastnet Rock colt is more than a chance of continuing his perfect start to 2014 after drawing the ideal barrier five for the Futurity Stakes.
Smokin’ Joey ($17)
Talented six-year-old Smokin’ Joey is one of the most experienced and consistent horses featuring in the final field for the 2014 Futurity Stakes. After winning the Group 3 TAB.com.au Stakes (1400m) on November 2nd, the Encosta De Lago gelding was able to overcome a wide line and produce a strong sprint to finish an unlucky second behind talented miler Boban in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) just one week later. Having claimed a strong barrier trial at Sandown on January 31st, Smokin’ Joey represents incredible value at $17, particularly after drawing barrier 1.
Classy colt Polanski closed a memorable 2013 spring campaign with three consecutive wins including the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) ahead of Complacent and Thunder Fantasy. Having highlighted the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) as the major target for the son of Rakti this campaign, trainer Robbie Laing said that while un-ideal, a prep run for Polanski ahead of next weekend’s Flemington feature is vital. A proven performer at Group 1 level, Polanski is sure to make a serious claim on the 2014 Futurity Stakes from barrier 7.
