Having already received substantial attention from punters since markets opened only yesterday, the popularity of this year’s Peter Young Stakes can largely be put down to the return of 2013 Melbourne Cup hero Fiorente.

Jumping as un-rivalled pre-post favourite after early pick Puissance De Lune was scratched; Fiorente became locked in a fierce battle up the famous Flemington straight with 2011 runner-up Red Cadeaux before pulling clear in the final 100m to deliver trainer Gai Waterhouse her first Melbourne Cup crown, and in turn earning a well-received break the spelling paddock.

When markets for the 2014 Peter Young Stakes first opened, Fiorente was offered at a quote of $2.60, however punters quickly recognised huge value for the talented six-year-old at that price, cutting the Monsun entire into a current short price of $2.30.

Having opened at the generous price of $7.50, five-year-old Pakal has registered as the undoubtable market mover, having received huge support to cut in to a current quote of $5.50.

The Lord Of England gelding was particularly consistent over five starts in his 2013 spring preparation, claiming two victories and a place before finishing fifth in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on November 2nd.

2012 Melbourne Cup Champion Green Moon has also been confirmed to make his 2014 debut in the Peter Young Stakes, however is yet to experience much more than a sprinkle, and currently offers punters outstanding value at $12 of a first-up victory on Saturday.

Having not lined-up for anything other than Group 1 events since the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) in September 2012, trainer Robert Hickmott is confident the Montjeu stallion can overcome the somewhat awkward barrier 7, particularly with in-form jockey Craig Williams on board. is currently offering the best odds on all Caulfield event this weekend, including the 2014 Peter Young Stakes.
