Melbourne Cup Winners Headline 2014 Peter Young Stakes

Despite sharing the same Caulfield race card with three Group 1 events, The 2014 Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) is set to be one of the most hotly-contested races of the day after this morning’s final field confirmed 2012 and 2013 Melbourne Cup Champions Green Moon (barrier 7) and Fiorente (barrier 5) are poised to make first appearances for 2014 this Saturday.

Having started his 2013 spring preparation sixth behind Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m), Fiorente quickly built to the task at hand, claiming the Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m), running third behind Shamus Award in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) before justifying favouritism with a superb run in the Race that Stops a Nation.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident of more big things for the talented Monsun entire throughout 2014, who appears to have returned the track well rested and ready to go after a strong barrier trial at Randwick three weeks ago.

2012 breakaway Melbourne Cup Champion Green Moon is also poised to return to the track for the first time this preparation in the 2014 Peter Young Stakes.

While unable to claim another win since beating Fiorente and Jakkalberry to the post in the 2012, trainer Robert Hickmott has elected to run the Montjeu stallion solely in Group 1 level events throughout 2013; a plan that did not pay dividends.

Despite the less-than-convincing season, Hickmott is confident Green Moon’s big race experience coupled with his proven late-sprint ability will count for a lot first-up on Saturday.

Having also featured in the 2013 Melbourne Cup field, Mourayan (barrier 1) is set to open his 2014 account in the 2014 Peter Young Stakes following an ideal break in the spelling paddock.

The Alhaarth entire quickly built to the task throughout the 2013 autumn, finishing fourth in the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) before closing his campaign with an easy win in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) ahead of Norsqui and Aliyana Tilde.

Regarded as a leading contender for several Group 1 events throughout the 2013 spring, Mourayan was noticeably underdone upon resumption and was unable to make any impact in all four starts.

Trainer Robert Hickmott has outlined another busy autumn schedule for the well-trialled eight-year-old, who will likely retire from racing come season’s end.

A total of nine runners have accepted for the 2014 Peter Young Stakes, with Fiorente featuring as the only horse carrying winning form into the event. is currently offering all new punters the chance to claim a bonus bet of up to $250 just for signing up!
