Capacity Field Confirmed for 2014 Oakleigh Plate

A capacity field of 18 has been confirmed to line up for the 2014 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday, including Lankan Rupee.

The talented sprinter stamped himself as an early favourite for this weekend’s Group 1 after convincingly winning the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) two weeks ago ahead of Oakleigh Plate rivals Iconic (barrier 19) and First Command (barrier 13).

After being taken straight to the lead by jockey Craig Newitt, who will retain the ride this weekend, Lankan Rupee dictated the pace and dominated the Rubiton Stakes throughout, sprinting away late to score a very comfortable victory.

Trainer Mick Price has been delighted with the form of the son of Redoute’s Choice since he was gelded following a largely un-heralding 2013 autumn, and is confident of another victory this weekend after drawing barrier 8.

Following two strong barrier trials at Cranbourne so far this preparation, talented short distance specialist Bel Sprinter has been confirmed to make his 2014 competitive debut in the Oakleigh Plate.

Despite a less-than-convincing 2013 spring campaign, trainer Jason Warren is confident in first-up success at Group 1 level for the Bel Esprit gelding, who opened his 2013 account with a blistering run to finish first in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).

Despite having never lined up for a Group 1 level event, trainer Peter Snowden is confident Knoydart can make his presence felt in the 2014 Oakleigh Plate.

Left in the spelling paddock for the 2013 spring season, Knoydart has returned to the track in near-perfect form, having claimed the TAB Rewards C&G (1200m), Listed Canterbury Classic (1100m) and Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) since December 28th.

The in-form More Than Ready gelding’s claims on maiden Group 1 success received a huge boost when drawing the ideal barrier 5, and will be partnered by jockey James McDonald for the first time.

Having finished third in last year’s Oakleigh Plate, Queensland-based hopeful Spirit Of Boom will be hopeful of going two better at Caulfield on Saturday, despite drawing the slightly awkward barrier 12.

Electing to only run in Group-level events during his 2013 spring preparation, the Sequalo entire managed to overcome a poor barrier and awkward jump to claim the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) before finishing fourth in his campaign-ending Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) behind classy gelding Buffering.

Peter Moody-trained Brilliant Bisc has been confirmed as the sole emergency for the 2014 Oakleigh Plate. is currently offering the best odds on all Caulfield events this weekend, including the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate!
