The first edition of The Championships is set to run over the weekends of April 12th and 19th this season, and with nominations for all events closing yesterday afternoon, a total of 1207 horses are now in the mix for a share in some of the richest prizes in Australian Racing.
112 horses have been nominated for the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m); now worth a cool $4 million, while 127 will be aiming to make the cut in the now $3 million Doncaster Handicap (1600m).
10 major races throughout the 2014 The Championships, including eight Group 1 events and two Group 2’s are set to feature runners from all corners of the globe; a feat CEO of The Championships Ian Mackay told TVN is an incredible response for the inaugural event.
“We were hoping for strong nominations and are thrilled to see the total number edge past the 1200 mark” Mackay said.
“Owners and trainers have embraced The Championships and it’s now full steam ahead for what will be two days of superb racing in April.
“We are over the moon with the response to The Championships”.
Several events scheduled for Caulfield this weekend will likely have a direct effect on The Championships, particularly the Doncaster Mile (1600m), TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) and Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m), which are often used as obvious progressions from both the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes and Group 1 Futurity Stakes.
