German import Pakal will contest this weekend’s Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) before moving on to appearances in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 8th and Group 1 The BMW (2500m) on April 5th, OTI Racing’s Terry Henderson revealed today.
Having opened his 2014 account third behind Chase The Rainbow and Star Rolling in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield two weeks ago, the Lord Of England gelding will face stiff competition in this weekend’s major Group 2, with 2012 and 2013 Melbourne Cup Champions Green Moon and Fiorente nominated to appear for the first time since last year’s race that stops a nation.
Jockey Glen Boss, who allowed Pakal to settle amongst the pack before sprinting for home late in the Carlyon Cup, has been confirmed to maintain the ride throughout the autumn preparation.
“It’s fair to say Glen didn’t flatten him first-up, but we can expect him to be ridden more forward this time now he’s a run fitter” Henderson told TVN.
Henderson also said the talented five-year-old would remain in Melbourne to contest the Australian Cup, before travelling to Sydney for The BMW; the major target this preparation.
“It seems like a few are going to miss that race, so it could be a really good option for him” Henderson added.
Having finished no worse than third in six starts throughout his debut preparation in late 2011, Pakal claimed only two wins in 13 starts in his native Germany, and has since won a further two races since being transferred to the care of trainer Mick Price at Caulfield.
