Nominations for the 2014 Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) are highlighted by several previous winners at Group 1 level, with 2013 Melbourne Cup Champion Fiorente set to make his return to the track for the first time since that memorable victory on the first Tuesday of November.
Slowing building to the task during his 2013 spring preparation, Fiorente followed up a strong victory in the Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) third behind Shamus Award in the Cox Plate (2040m) before battling it out with 2011 Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux down the famous Flemington straight before pulling clear with 50 metres to run.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse revealed the star son of Monsun took particularly well to his time in the spelling paddock, and looked refreshed and ready to go when second in a Randwick barrier trial in late January.
Amazingly not featuring as the only Melbourne Cup Champion eying a tilt at the 2014 Peter Young Stakes, 2012 winner Green Moon has also been included in nominations for this weekend’s Group 2.
The well-trialled Montjeu entire has not managed to find the finishing line first since his resounding triumph in November 2012, however has in fact not contested any event with a rating of less-than Group 1 since the 2012 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes on September 15th.
Despite his recent lack of success, trainer Robert Hickmott is confident Green Moon’s big race experience will count for a lot in the 2014 Peter Young Stakes, for which is currently an early third favourite behind Fiorente and Foreteller.
Following a win in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) ahead of Puissance De Lune and Moudre early in his 2013 spring campaign, seven-year-old Foreteller was hyped as a serious threat to the Melbourne Cup field, and despite running second to equine superstar Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m), was unable to reach full potential and closed his season a disappointing 17th in the Race that Stops a Nation.
Opening his 2014 account fourth behind Moment Of Change in the Group 1 C.F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 8th, trainer Chris Waller believes the Dansili gelding is in prime position to claim the 2014 Peter Young Stakes, particularly if drawing a favourable gate when final acceptances are released on Wednesday.
Nominations for the 2014 Group 2 Peter Young Stakes have been extended to 10:00am tomorrow, February 18th.
