After claiming a memorable victory in the 2014 Listed Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill Gardens last weekend, trainer Gai Waterhouse has revealed classy sprinter Fighting Sun will not contest the Group 1 Golden Slipper on April 5th after pulling up sore.
Digging deep to overcome stablemate Mr Cha Cha in the final straight before comfortably strolling across the line, Waterhouse told TVN Fighting Sun is currently in the care of the Randwick Equine Centre being assessed for a final diagnosis.
“He pulled up sore, he’s out of the Slipper” Waterhouse said this morning.
“We’ll just have to see what transpires in the next few days.”
Owned by international conglomeration Sun Bloodstock, Waterhouse shared her disappointment for the owners at what was to be a legitimate tilt at the 2014 Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).
“They are overseas people who have spent a lot of money in Australia and were excited to have a really live chance going into the slipper” Waterhouse added.
“He’s such a good horse, but that’s unfortunately how things can happen”.
Fighting Sun is yet to taste anything but success in his racing career so far, having coupled two strong barrier trials with a maiden victory in the ATC Membership On Sale Plate (1100m) prior to Saturday’s win at Listed level.
Prior to news of his injury, the Northern Meteor colt was sitting as $6 outright second-favourite for the 2014 Golden Slipper at Ladbrokes.com.au behind talented filly Earthquake, who is also expected to follow up her thumping victory in the Blue Diamond Prelude event two weeks ago in the 2014 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
