Mossfun Overcomes Talented Field to Win 2014 Widden Stakes

Talented two-year-old Mossfun has comfortably claimed the 2014 Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) ahead of Ygritte and undoubtable pre-post favourite Twirl.

Carrying winning form into the 2014 Widden Stakes after claiming her maiden; the Inglis Nursery Plate (1000m) in November, the Mossman filly jumped well and sat mid-pack for a good portion of the race before storming to a commanding lead with 200m to run and maintaining her strong sprint.

Spokesman for owners Emirates Park Number 2 Syndicate, Trevor Lobb has been particularly impressed with the form of the filly and is excited by her 2014 autumn prospects.

“She’s a very nice filly” Lobb said immediately following the impressive victory.

“She’s done everything right since we bought her and John (Hawkes) was very keen on her today after she trialled so well the other day.

“She’s a real racehorse; she puts her head down and puts a full effort in.

Having continued her perfect career start, a busy season is now a definite reality for Mossfun, with a run in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 22 a likely target before a tilt at the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th.

“You have to put them in this grade to see how they’re going” Lobb added.

“It was always the plan to give her a little break and bring her back for here and now we’ll just step slowly towards the main ones.”

In-form jockey Tommy Berry delivered a sensational ride on Mossfun; allowing her to settle off the pace after leaving from the ideal barrier 1 before jogging home to secure the first-up win.

Classy filly Twirl lead betting markets for the 2014 Widden Stakes all week following a strong preparation, however was unable to find clear passage and kick until the final 100m, surpassing early leader Alpha Miss to claim third behind $16 outsider Ygritte, who produced an impressive sprint to finish second.

Having comfortably beaten several leading chances for the 2014 Golden Slipper, Mossfun has more than stamped herself as a filly to watch over the 2014 Autumn calendar.
