Fighting Sun claims honours in 2014 Canonbury Stakes

Gai Waterhouse has secured an impressive first and second in the 2014 Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) after classy colt Fighting Sun produced a strong sprint to beat stablemate Mr Cha Cha and a fast-finishing Ghibellines.

Claiming two strong barrier trials and his maiden; the ATC Membership On Sale Plate (1100m) in January, Fighting Sun has more than stamped his claim on a run in the 2014 Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) and is also looking likely for a tilt at the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) in April.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is understandably impressed by the talented two-year-old and is confident of a stand-out season following another strong win.

“He’s a very serious horse” Waterhouse told the media following the race.

“I loved the way he cruised into second spot he came round and pressed the button and accelerated.

“The Horse he beat is a very sharp horse; (Mr) Cha Cha.

“He’s improving and that’s what you want to see.”

Jockey Tommy Berry delivered another brilliant ride on the Northern Meteor colt, and was particularly thankful for the faith shown in him by both Waterhouse and owners Sun Bloodstock.

“I know it wasn’t a big race, but when you ride a colt like that” Berry said upon dismount.

“Ive ridden some good horses, but the way he just travelled up and let down, he really put them away quickly.

“He was still going a little bit late but he just wouldn’t lay down.

“I’m just excited now; I don’t think I’ll be able to go to sleep for the next few nights.

“He’s a good colt and I’m privileged to ride him.”

Fighting Sun has the opportunity to record a stunning breakout season, and looks sure to do so if current form is continued through to the Golden Slipper. is currently offering all punters the chance to claim a bonus bet of up to $250 just for signing up, which can be split into four smaller bets!
