2014 Canonbury Stakes Betting Preview and Tips

The 2014 Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) will jump race four on a strong card at Rosehill Gardens today and will feature just seven runners after Anthony Cummings-trained Mr Bogart was scratched from what would have been his debut event.

Having opened as market favourite earlier this week, classy two-year-old Fighting Sun has been the undoubtable punters’ pick; cutting in from an opening quote of $3.10 to currently sit as clear $1.75 favourite and major market mover.

Ghibellines ($3.90) and Delectation ($5.50) have also received strong support leading up to the 2014 Canonbury Stakes, while Gai Waterhouse-trained Mr Cha Cha ($10) has experienced something of a sprinkling of wagers.

Will Fighting Sun live up to his resounding support base or can one of his classy opponents steal the show?

1st

Fighting Sun ($1.75)

Gai Waterhouse-trained Fighting Sun has widely impressed since debuting on track in December, producing two strong barriers trials before claiming a resounding first-up victory in the ATC Membership On Sale Plate (1100m) over a field that included exciting gelding Boomwaa. Waterhouse has been impressed with the fast rise to form of the Northern Meteor colt and is planning a course towards runs in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) and Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).

2nd

Ghibellines ($3.90)

Ghibellines appears to have returned to the track in pristine condition following two strong barrier trials in January. While relatively inexperienced, trainer Peter Snowden is confident in the talent of the Shamardal colt, particularly after a fast finishing fourth behind classy colt Law in the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m).

3rd

Mr Cha Cha ($10)

Overcoming an awkward start to claim his only race to date, a minor over 1000m at Wyong in January, Mr Cha Cha offers excellent value to punters at $10. Having drawn the unfortunate barrier 8, the Snitzel colt could pose a serious threat if jockey Tommy Berry can find a clear passage in the race’s early stages.
