Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Featuring on a particularly strong card at Flemington this weekend, the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) will feature just eight starters after Peter Moody-trained Miralago was scratched from the event overnight.
Following a resounding victory in the Robert Hunter Filles (1400m) on February 1st, Scratchy Bottom claimed early favouritism for The Vanity; opening at a generous $5.50 which was immediately snapped up by punters who have now instilled the classy daughter of Sebring as an outright $3.50 chance and the undoubted market mover.
Will Scratchy Bottom justify her huge show of support, or will one of the race’s resuming runners record a first-up win for 2014?
Despite a rather forgettable debut to her racing career when seventh in a minor at Bendigo, classy three-year-old Solicit recorded one of the most consistent seasons of any Australian runner in 2013, finishing no worse than third in all of her six proceeding starts, including a strong finish behind Kirramosa and Zanbagh in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) on November seventh. Representing excellent value at $4.20 for a first-up victory in The Vanity, a long campaign is on the cards for the Street Cry filly, who will be geared towards the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in October.
Scratchy Bottom ($3.50)
Trained by Michael Kent at Cranbourne, Scratchy Bottom has fast-become a three-year-old to watch after strolling home in two of her three starts to date and running a strong fourth behind Gypsy Diamond in her first race at Group level; the Don’t Hold Back Stakes (1600m) in January. Having drawn the rather awkward barrier seven, jockey Michael Rodd will need to find clear passage early if she is a to be in the mix in the final straight.
Girl In Flight ($4.60)
Having won all three starts to date, Robbie Griffiths-trained Girl In Flight will be aiming to impose herself early in the 2014 The Vanity; her first tilt at a Group level event. Drawing the ideal barrier four, the Commands filly’s claims are further boosted by usual partner Ryan Maloney, who has been confirmed to take the ride on Saturday.
